OpenDNS

I came across OpenDNS this week and gave it a go - you should too!

Use OpenDNS

Certainly in the USA, the speed is a lot better than the DNS service offered by my ISP, Verizon.

But the best part is the extra layer of security it adds to your home network.  With the recent conficker panic, just by using openDNS, you would of been aware of the fact that there was an infected system on your home network and it would of been prevented from calling home.

It can try to correct common misspelt (typo) domains for you, and help avoid you accidently hitting a wierd web site full of adds or popups or worse!

And for those of you with kids, there are also several layers of content filtering it will apply to keep the shades of nastiness out of your house!

Lastly, if you want, you can activate the stats feature, and this will show you various pieces of information about the top domains and lookups etc.

I highly recommend it.  If you don't like it you can easily change it back - no software needed.

A few things I found when I switched a while ago to OpenDNS:

1. It can stop you accessing your windows home server, unless you add it's shortname to your hosts file.

2. It can stop you being able to login to Yahoo Messenger

Not being able to login to Yahoo Messenger actually caused me to stop using it.

Cheers!

Two reasons that don't bother me! No Windows Home Server or Yahoo IM in my house!

I've been using OpenDNS for a while now. Its an excellent service most of the time. Caution- when you use it on a travel machine (laptop) hotel and wifi networks that incept dns and redirect to a login page can be a brief problem.
