IE Market Share
A while back, I took a snapshot of the browsers used to access this blog, the big two browsers were IE 6.x and Firefox 1.x. Firefox was 55.7%, IE was 42.2% and the rest was spread over 9 other browser types. Additionally, one year ago eWeek's Jim Rapoza ran an article predicting that IE market share would drop to 75%, from 96%. I placed a reminder on my calendar for last week to see how things fare now. And I sent, this email to Jim Rapoza on the 3rd October to see where things stand:Jim,
About one year ago, you predicted that IE's market share would drop below 75%, How did you do? I don't think it has dropped that much. I did a quick compare on the brands of browsers that hit my blog, but I don't think that is representative of the world at large!!!!
I use Firefox for the majority of the time - it is certainly a lot easier to do this now than before. Microsoft are now responding (which, if nothing else, validates Firefox's existence). Of course, MS are now playing the wait for Vista card, to try and detract from it's current deficiencies (and no, XP SP2 still doesn't do much for IE)
Firefox has taken a few blows recently, and the MS advocates are trying to cite that IE is now more secure that Firefox. I don't think so, and MS are certainly still very lacking when it comes to responding to identified threats.
Any plans on a column summarising the current state of things?
Thanks,
Simon
I was a bit surprised that I did not get a reply, especially when this weeks eWeek is running a follow on article!
