How do you encrypt?
I'm off to the SANS - 'What works in mobile encryption Summit' in San Jose. It all came about at the last minute. My colleague, Marlene, asked if I could stand in for her, and that, coupled with my new job responsibilities (global desktop image support and standards) it seems a good fit. Alas it will be a rapid trip - in Sunday night, out Tuesday morning. I have to rush back east to attend a class in Cambridge on how not to get screwed by Microsoft how to successfully negotiate your Microsoft licensing agreement.Mobile encryption is the focus, mainly laptops, but that has to extend to the PDA/Smartphone class of devices too. We currently do encrypt, and have encrypted for a long time with various degrees of success/issues.
Full disc v specific folders? Application specific encryption, email encryption... the list goes on! Lotus Notes has encrypted well for a long time (I remember the time to process warnings, when you created the private/public key pair back in the 386 days!), but unless you stored all content within Notes, that model did not extend well to the usual desktop productivity tools. Obviously Outlook, does not have the same concerns (less to it). .OST's encrypt, .PST's pretend too. What will SharePoint offer?
Anyway, hopefully I can pick up some new ideas/trends to improve things for us. I will be presenting on a panel, summarising FMC's experiences to date - hopefully any questions won't be too tough!
