Enterprise 2.0 General Session

Rough notes from the opening session...

asked to keep phones on (turn off ringer), hosted a quick SMS text based survey.  Attendees were asked questions, and asked to text their answers - that was cool.

enterprise 2.0 is all about metadata

organising business

which pile do you put the socks in ?

physical limitation of organisation - break away - everything is digital - principals change

leaf on many branches - important and messy -messi is good online
messines is a virtue - so long as you can sort through it

no difference between data and metadata - metadata is the stuff you know

unowned order - provide as much as possible, allowing people to sort by whatever they want

authority - wikipedia, mailing lists are more intelligent than any individual - knowledge is social

major revolution - just the begining

andrew mcafee - harvard business school

State of the Meme

Awareness of topic
Grade A
remarkable progress - children driving execs!
social software - process (erp, crm) systems are what corporations do, are comfortable with.
network effects - more participant will drive more value
freeform authoring - minimise fields! let people do what they want to.  dont know what they know, the users generate the meta data as a natural by product of their work. selfish driven classifications (tagging a photo) all add value.
emergence - not to be feared or resisted

Technologies
Grade A-
Excellent progress
Growing all the time
Startups and incumbents
enterprise needs
watchout for
ease of use
emails 9X challenge
overestimatethe value of email by 3, underestimate the value of alternative by 3

Communicating Results
Grade C
Spotty progress -
not enough good case studies, benchmarks, stories - avoid roi numbers !!! they just damage your reputation
proposa: e2.0 repository for e2.0 efforts
considerations:
disclosures
ground rules - wikipedia is a good example of these, evloutionary

impressed by "the non patheticness" of the online community

Ambuj Goyal - aka Mike Rhodin!

IBM General Manager

can share with suppliers
commerce with customers
share information with employees

shifted from just browsing to updating, commenting
three facets - economic, technology, community = web 2.0

very business centric presentation (which makes sense) but no new content, and no dynamism!

moving into a sales pitch - mashups, ajax, composite applications, rss feeds, websphere portal express

community and commerce using social software

video - ooops - tech glitches! waiting for the video 2.0 upgrade! don't think it is going to work.  there is a big pile of a/v equipment behind us. we have audio, then video, but not at the same time!! the guy in the video, happened to be in the room so did a voice over - big round of applause for the recovery.

IBM appear to have many applications that are now "social" enabled QEDWiki - mashup maker, click on a vessel in the shipping widge, picks up vessel detail via RSS feed, brings in google map, weather information, piracy information etc for the current location of the vessel.  If the information is in the system, Info 2.0, can really leverage it.  ibmalphaworks.com to download QEDWiki.

Lotus Connections
Activities, Communications, Blogs, Profiles, Bookmarks - Not just a place to put documents, but a place for a team to be.

http://services.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes - data visualisation & analysis of social data - looks like a very interesting project.

slow start to the presentation - it actually benefitted from the a/v problems, and a human element!

time for a break
