It's been a while since my last posting on here too. I have had a few problems with mobility and swelling since my first surgery in October 2006. My new doctor is recommending "lengthening" the tendon to allow for more mobility. Not sure I want to do this as I'm not a fan of the boot. He says I can wait until spring so that I'm not in a cast/boot in the snow. Have any of y'all ever heard of this or had it done?

Hi all

It has been awhile since I posted. I had achilles surgery x 5 which included a tendon transfer. Last surgery was in 2008. Was recently put on prednisone for my asthma and now understand more the link not just with antibiotics and achilles but also prednisone and achilles. By the end of the short course, the achilles was stinging and could not touch the area. It is settling down now to what it usually is. I am okay with shoes as long as there are no backs to them as the ankle area is and will remain quite larger then the other ankle. I was lucky and found a pair of clogs for wintertime at Mark's Work Wear.I do stretching each day as well as the recumbent bike.Very rarely do I limp unless I have been doing alot of walking.

I'm wearing heels - wedges and thick heels. Bought 4" chunky heels ... but that's just for getting in and out of the car (ha ha). I'm swimming again. I'm dancing too! Life is good. God is good.

There's stiffness, but after the first few steps, I'm fine. No limp. Some swelling at the end of the day, but no pain.

Take care all.

Hi Marv,

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like they don't know what they're doing at your hospital either, i bet you're glad you're not too far from this private clinic. I hope you're now on the mend and not suffering too much.

I've since been back for another outpatient's appointment and found the doctor to be a bit more civil this time, although when asked what my op had actually involved, he was a bit vague and totally contradicted what the surgeon who did the op said was going to be done (typical). He said they had released my achilles tendon by cutting the tendon sheath and it had not been stitched back in place after the cysts and damaged area were removed, apparently so that i wouldn't get any more pain when the tendon became inflamed again (i thought the op was to hopefully cure that). I was given yet more antibiotics as the infection was not yet fully cured and this time told to rest it as much as possible and keep it elevated, the same doc 1 week earlier told me i should try and bear weight on it. I must admit i still feel rather confused as to why i have not been stitched or had a cast put on it (and i'm gonna have one hell of a scar). I also now wish that i too had gone private and have said that if my other one ever needs doing (i have had problems with this also in the past) i will definitely be going private. If i lived anywhere near the London Foot Clinic i would definitely be taking your advice and paying out for a proper scan Marv, i'm going to give it a few more weeks until my next outpatients appointment and see if i can get any better answers then, i will be making a complaint about how i was treated on the day of my surgery and the lack of post operative care or wound advice, that is for sure but i don't want to rock the boat whilst i've still got such a long way to go. I've been told it'll be about 3 to 4 weeks until my wound heals, lets hope i get some physio sorted too otherwise i think i'm never going to walk properly again.

Paula

Hi Lisa, thanks for your reply, hope you got your cast off on Wed. I saw my G.P last week and asked him what he thought but he just told me to ask the surgeon next time I see him. Unfortunately, I don't see him for another couple of weeks so I wonder if that will be too late. I now live in Canada but lived in England for 30 years and we grew up believing that Doctors were little God's and you didn't question anything they said. Unfortunately it's a habit hard to break!

Hi Paula, what a horror story you have told. I ruptured October 1st and went to Brighton A&E where they herded me around like cattle and completely screwed up my cast (did NOT set it with foot pointing down). So, I put my hand in my pocket (£3k) and went for a private Op at the London Foot and Ankle Clinic in London Bridge Hospital. See Martin Klinke there for a consultation and ultrasound scan of your Achilles (about £200). Best of luck and it's time to take ACTION!

stay safe

-Marv

Hi folks

I stumbled across this blog whilst desperately trying to find information to help me understand what the hell has been happening to me over the last month and looking for a positive way forward. Please bear with my looooong story if you can, i'd appreciate any advice that anyone could give me.

I finally gave in and agreed to achilles tendon surgery a few months back after over 8 years of tendon trouble on both my feet. My left achilles had quite a lump of scar tissue, was very tight, had multiple cysts and was no longer responding to consevative treatment (if you can call it that) and self help. I never felt very reassured by the orthopaedic surgeon (UK NHS) i was referred to and was terrified of going ahead with everything but felt i was at the end of the line and no longer able to even walk around the supermarket without immense pain, basically i was like a cripple.

Anyway, nearly 4 weeks ago i was admitted for day surgery to my nearest hospital, was told by a man who never introduced himself (a replacement surgeon as the one i had originally was away for 12 months on a sabbatical) that he was going to do an "achilles tendon release", i would not have my foot in a cast, would not need crutches and would WALK OUT OF THERE the same afternoon, oh and he was going to use steri strips to close the wound! You can imagine my disbelief at what he was saying. I tried to question him and was basically treat like some kind of imbecile and dismissed. The nurse who was alloted to me didn't even know who this man was and had to go and find out to let me know. I spent the next 2 hours feeling very scared and wanting to cancel but was worried that if i did back out, that would be it, crippled for life.

When i came round after surgery i found that all i had on my wound was a small amount of padding and a crepe bandage around my ankle, that's it. No one came round to tell me what, if anything had been found, removed or done. I was very ill after the anaesthetic and yet was sent home within 3 hours with no crutches (as promised), no advice about wound care and told i'd receive an out patients appointment through the post for 2 weeks later, basically i was bundled out of the ward supported by a nurse on one side and my partner on the other to stop me falling over as i was so woosy after the op still and in incredible pain. I spent a night in agony and had to crawl on my hands and knees to use the loo as i could not walk, my wound bled badly and i was later to discover after a 3 hour wait at A & E that not only was it unstitched, it had only been held together with only 3 steri strips. A & E made me feel like i was wasting their time, bandaged me back up and sent me home with no further instructions. Thankfully my GP took pity on me and lent me some crutches after my partner complained but other than that, we had to go and buy dressings for the wound and keep changing them daily as it kept weeping a funny straw coloured liquid and wasn't healing properly. I did manage to start bearing weight on my foot and get a bit more mobile as i had been told to but 2 days before i was due to go for my outpatients appointment i started to get terrible pain and swelling and spent another night in agony before i was able to get back to A & E again for another 3 hour wait, only to be told what i already knew, i had an infection. The next day i managed somehow to borrow a wheelchair so i could attend my outpatients appointment, saw yet another Doctor for 3 minutes excruciating prodding and poking, had hardly any dressing put on my now oozing open wound and told i should still bear weight on my foot which was now incredibly swollen along with the rest of my lower leg. I have now been taking 16 antibiotics per day, spent 5 days in bed unable to move for the pain, am still unable to even put my foot in a weight bearing position let alone walk on it and still completely in the dark. I cannot find any information about this achilles tendon release op, apart from one that is done on people with cerebral palsy and the wound is always stitched and the foot is put in a cast for 6 to 8 weeks.

What the hell have they done to me? I feel i should have followed my instincts and walked out of that ward all those weeks ago. Can anyone offer me any hope?

Hi ATR clan! I am new to this site- Inspired by all of you and the feedback- thought I could add my experience too! I ruptured my achilles the evening of June 23rd 09'dancing barefoot at the local brew pub.. to my brother in-laws band "The Damnphools" what a fool I am :)Having a complete restructering of my other ankle over 16 years ago and a possible overuse/ compensation issue.. I live a pretty active lifestyle/mountain town livin skiing, hiking etc.. I waited until the next afternoon to call the doc wishing really that I had only pulled it slightly!! I too felt like someone had kicked me! And the sound is still haunting me! It was a country swing session at it's finest!! And snap! I spent the majority of the next morning researching/trying to self diagnose.. When I arrived at the doc's office it was clear MRI and ex-ray's!! I had a complete "high" rupture- I was traveling the following day ironically to a footwear conference so, I waited for surgery due to my work trip that I simply could not cancel, my doc agreed that the damage had already been done and gave me the go ahead walking boot and cryo/cuff cooler and I was on my way to fly! Surgery was sceduled on July 1 a week later after wearing a pressure walking cast at the trade show!! I was on my feet almost the whole time!! I am now at 4 months post surgery & no boot!! I wear a slip on ankle brace and still elevate with ice every chance I get. I can wear normal shoes but prefer dansko's clogs for the lift and support or my MBT's for short periods of time. I have also been using a theraband for PT. It seems my experience has been fairly progressive. Surgery and not weight bearing for 3o days totally sucked- it was scooter time!! I flew again 2 weeks post surgery with my son and the entire experience was really quite easy! Get a scooter!! Most of them come with a basket too! ;) 6o days of crutches and slight degree changes in my walking cast at each appt. Not really doing much more than watching movies, reading.. it gives down time a whole new meaning!! At 70 days I was given the go ahead to wear with caution normal footwear and "listen to my body" So far so good. I still walk with a slight limp!! As for pain..not so much.. mostly I am stiff/sore in the AM. I can engage my calf muscle now and will begin working out to gain my strength back !! What a process!! I take it slow and really appreciate reading everyone's experiences here!! I have been extremely cautious in the last 4 months. I am walking again!! Yea!!

Hi, I have read right through the blogs and there is some great info but now I am a bit worried as none of the non- surgical treatments are the same as mine. I ruptured my A.T almost three weeks ago whilst running for a bus. I went immediately to the emerg. dept at my local hospital where I was given an ultra sound, told that I had a partial tear in my tendon and put in a splint with my toes angled right down, no weight bearing. Exactly one week later I saw the specialist who removed the splint, performed the Thompson test on me and told me that I had a full blown rupture. He also said that because of my age (63) he didn't recommend surgery and he prescribed an aircast in which I could weight bear, and should remove when I showered or slept. I was then sent to the ortho. shop where the lady bent my foot to fit into the boot and told me that if I couldn't get my heel right down I should buy some insoles from a pharmacy and fit them in until my heel would go right the way down. No gradual adjustment, no wedges and no support at night! Now I am worried, am I being given the right treatment. I have been told that the surgeon is very well respected but does anyone else have any comments?

Following on from my (757) four and a half weeks past my surgery and a few problems with my wound healing. I was given antibiotics but they have not done the job.

Had a swab and still waiting for the results to see if a change in antibiotics will sort it out. What is most annoying is the continual throbbing and soreness of my foot. Cannot really feel any issues around the wound. Very tired a lot of the time but putting this down to lack of exercise and pain killers.

I am sure the doctor will sort the problem out and after so many horror stories of not having the surgery I am confident I made the right choice even if the healing problem takes some time.

What a great post this is! My story...can't say that my ATR was a surprise as I had about 5 weeks prior where I was feeling a lot of soreness but decided to ignore it; don't! Went to A&E here in the UK where they put me in a back slb plaster but FORGOT to put my foot in Plantar flex (toes pointing down). 11 days later went to the fracture clinic and saw the consultant. Oh! dear, your foot is in the wrong position. Oh! well, put it back in plaster and come and see me in 4 weeks time. Huh? No ultrasound scan? Just leave it be? No way Jose. So I got a 2nd opinion and am now going ahead with surgery. Follow Robert B's advise; listen to your body over the Drs advice. But please don't push it! Met a guy on the tube train who had re-ruptured TWICE; he didn't have the surgery and wish he had. Stay safe
